A realistic house cleaning schedule

You do not need marathon clean-up days. Use these blocks.

Daily (10 to 20 minutes)

  • Clear kitchen counters, wipe with a general cleaner

  • Load or unload the dishwasher

  • Quick sweep in the kitchen and entryway

  • Wipe the sink and taps

  • Tidy one "drop zone" (table, island, foyer shelf)

Weekly (pick 1 to 2 tasks per day)

  • Bathrooms: toilet, sink, mirror, quick shower wipe-down

  • Dust: surfaces, window sills, baseboards in high-traffic rooms

  • Vacuum: carpets and rugs, then hard floors

  • Mop: hard floors with a damp microfibre mop

  • Sheets and towels

A lot of germs spread through the stuff you touch all the time. Put these on your weekly list: light switches, door handles, remotes, countertops.

Monthly (60 to 120 minutes)

  • Clean inside the microwave and fridge shelves

  • Wipe cabinet fronts and door handles

  • Scrub grout and shower surround

  • Clean bin lids and the inside of bins

  • Vacuum baseboards and behind furniture

Winter salt and slush: keep it from wrecking your floors

If you live near Baltimore, Towson, Catonsville, Dundalk, or anywhere that gets road salt, your entryway is your first problem area.

Stop it at the door

  • Put a mat outside and a mat inside

  • Add a boot tray with a lip (so meltwater stays contained)

  • Keep a small towel by the door for paws and boots

Remove salt film safely (hard floors)

  1. Dry-remove grit first: vacuum or dust mop

  2. Mix a mild solution: 1 L warm water + 2 to 5 mL dish soap

  3. Use a damp microfibre mop, wring it out well

  4. Rinse with clean water (lightly), then dry with a towel

Skip harsh shortcuts:

  • Do not mix bleach with other cleaners, it can create toxic fumes

  • Avoid oil-based soaps on floors, they can leave a film that grabs dirt

  • Avoid vinegar on wood or natural stone, the acid can damage finishes
